Here's just some of what Employment Connection has been up since our last newsletter.


Isis Mahr Memorial Fund

Employment Connection recently made a contribution to the Isis Mahr Memorial Fund. Isis, the granddaughter of former Employment Connection CEO Brenda Mahr, was the victim of a drive-by shooting in 2021. Following the tragic incident, high school students from across the region organized to raise awareness of gun violence perpetrated against St. Louis youths.


Tower Grove Neighborhoods CDC Landlord Training

Employment Connection’s Manager of Housing Services Andrea Lewis spoke about our housing assistance programs at a landlord training seminar presented by Tower Grove Neighborhoods CDC, the STL Vacancy Collaborative, and the North Newstead Association. You can view Andrea’s presentation here.


New Employment Connection Board Fellow Bethany Copeland


Bethany Copeland is an Employment Connection Board Fellow with Washington University’s Center for Experiential Learning. She is a Master of Social Work candidate at the Brown School who is studying organizational leadership and management.


Bethany is an Engage Democracy Fellow at the Gephardt Institute for Civic and Community Engagement, a Graduate Assistant with the Center for Human Service Leadership at the Delmar DivINe, and a Community Relations Practicum Student with St. Louis CITY SC. Prior to pursuing a masters degree and moving to St. Louis, she worked for 12 years in the nonprofit sector in various locations—Miami, FL, the Dominican Republic, and Nashville, TN.

Our Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) program goes beyond putting young clients in jobs. We offer additional support services to help with training, housing, health issues, and so much more. Learn more about our WIOA program led by Sara Brown in this video.



CEO Sal Martinez Emcees Big Brothers Big Sisters Event

Employment Connection CEO Sal Martinez was recently selected to emcee the big Rock Paper Scissors Battle at the Ballpark that was hosted by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Missouri (BBESEMO) at Busch Stadium. Martinez is a former long-time board member of BBSEMO and serves as a big brother to Jamar who lives in the Dutchtown neighborhood.


Employment Connection also recently partnered with BBSEMO to provide eviction prevention assistance to dozens of families in the St. Louis community. Funding for this special partnership was provided by the St. Louis Community Foundation.


Sal also recently received the St. Louis Impact award from Park Central Development at their annual gala at the Palladium. He was honored for his distinguished career as an executive in place-based community development, as well as his leadership at Employment Connection and a number of other civic organizations.


June Is Pride Month!

Employment Connection is excited to celebrate LGBTQIA+ Pride Month! We stand together with our community regardless of background. Catch Team EC at the Grand Pride Parade on June 26th Downtown!
