World of Work Update

World of Work continues to grow! Through July of 2024, 541 graduates have completed our World of Work job readiness training program—an amazing increase of 54% compared to our 2023 year-to-date numbers! We're delighted to serve so many new clients, and we're very proud of the amazing work our staff is doing to prepare more and more clients for rewarding work and a path to self-sufficiency.

This client and recent World of Work graduate won a free bike that was donated to us via Anheuser-Busch, Big Shark Bicycle Company, and the United Way of Greater St. Louis!

Solar Installation Program

Our next training cohort in our Solar Panel Installation Training program starts class in August! Participants receive hands-on training, certifications, and supportive services including our World of Work job readiness training to prepare them for an exciting new career in a fast-growing field. And thanks to our partnerships with BNSF, Straight Up Solar, and U.S. Bank, they'll get paid for completing the training too!

A few slots still remain for our Summer 2024 cohort. Contact Christina Brewington at brewingtonc@employmentstl.org or 314-333-5627 for more information and to sign up.

DOCY Update

The Dutchtown Opportunity Coalition for Youth is excited to welcome LaCorsha as DOCY's new Youth Specialist! LaCorsha (pictured above, third from left) introduced herself to the neighborhood at an event held by our DOCY partner organization, Dutchtown Main Streets, where she met board members, neighbors, and new executive director Tasha Pettis-Bonds.

Team EC also joined our partners in Dutchtown at a special event hosted by St. Louis CITY SC at Marquette Park. Sal and his little brother Jamar, a Dutchtown resident (they were matched by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Mo.), also greeted Betsy King, Director of Programs at Gene Slay’s Girls and Boys Club at this awesome activity. Jamar is a proud member of the DOCY team and is enjoying the benefits of his membership.

Employment Connection EVP/COO David Kessel Announces Retirement

After almost 30 years of service to Employment Connection and our clients, David Kessel has decided to retire later this year. David first arrived to Team EC in 1995, when he was hired as Chief Financial Officer under the leadership of Brenda Mahr, our former CEO. David was then promoted the position of Chief Operating Officer in 2001 and added the title of Executive Vice President to his growing responsibilities in 2018.

Although we are sad to see David go, we are excited that he will get to pursue many of the adventures that he has put off because of his dedication and commitment to our clients. David will always be a member of Team EC and we look forward to sharing many flowers with him before his last day as a full-time employee!

SLDC Funding Announcement

Employment Connection has received a conditional funding award from the St. Louis Development Corporation that would enable us to reopen our former Cure Violence office on Natural Bridge Avenue in the Wells-Goodfellow neighborhood. This support would allow EC to expand our capacity and services in North St. Louis. Stay tuned!

EC Green Jobs Program Partners with Dutchtown Main Streets

We're excited to announce a new opportunity for our Green Jobs Program clients! In partnership with Dutchtown Main Streets, our new Dutchtown Green Team will be responsible for maintaining and beautifying Marquette Park and the newly established VAL Garden Park on Virginia Avenue.

Both spaces have seen significant upgrades and expanded usage, in part thanks to our partnership with Dutchtown Main Streets on events like Movie Nights, Marquette Community Day, and more. We're proud to expand our work together to help make Dutchtown more beautiful!

EC Out and About

EC team member Mike represented Employment Connection at the recent Moorish Festival!

Sal and ShaDonna participated in the Peabody/LaSalle Park Peace Walk this month!

Shantel assisted our partners, the Diamond Divas Empowerment Foundation, with preparing household items to be distributed to local families. Eddie Ross and his teammates at DDEF are awesome!
